Interceptive Orthodontics

Orthodontists can do more than just straightening your teeth!  We work to correct problems that can affect your mouth and jaw. That being said, braces are just one form of the many appliances we have at our disposal that can help you live a healthier, more positive life.  Because we can make your appliances (and retainers) on site in our in-office laboratory, you have quicker turn around times and the doctors have greater control over the movements of your teeth.

While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some children’s orthodontic problems can benefit from earlier treatment. If it appears that your child will need treatment at some point, our doctors can advise you about the best time to begin.

If early treatment is indicated, it can give us the chance to:

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Improve the way lips meet

Many of the appliances listed here are fixed appliances, meaning that they are not removable. It is important to avoid sticky, chewy or brittle foods with these appliances. Food items such as: caramels, taffy, gum, hard candies, ice, and gummy candies are ones to stay away from. It is a good idea to cut raw fruits and veggies (such as apples and carrots) into smaller pieces before eating. These appliances will be more effective if cared for properly.
